So (to speak
candidly), here's the deal...I've met many
parents over the years who've expressed a
desire to raise godly children in a biblical
way. I've met few parents, however,
who feel that they have a good grasp of what
that means and looks like. In it's
simplest form, this is why we are having a
parenting seminar at Grace:
to communicate a vision for biblical parenting and
to offer practical insight and resources for parenting with such a
vision in everyday life. That is, together we will look at
what the bible has to say about parenting
and then we'll offer a number practical ways
to put that knowledge into action. By
the end of the seminar our hope is that
everyone would walk away with a clear grasp
of their parental charge (what God expects
from parents) and aim (the goal of biblical
parenting) as well as a personal and
corporate game plan for raising children
(immediate and long-term).
We'll do all of
this over the course of 5 sessions (two on
Friday and three on Saturday). Through
video and audio messages we'll hear from
Voddie Baucham,
John Piper,
Tedd Tripp, and a few others.
We'll also hear from several "seasoned"
parents at Grace Church and I'll offer some
opening and closing thoughts.
Finally, our
theme, One Generation, comes from
Psalm 145:4 which says, "One generation
shall commend your works to another, and
shall declare your mighty acts." The
idea at the heart of this verse and the
heart of this conference is that the
beginning and end of biblical parenting is
the declaration of God's mighty acts.
Biblical parenting begins, then, when
parents come to love God more than all other
things (including their own kids) and its
goal is children who come to love God above
all things (including their own parents).
I invite you to
consider joining us for the third of our three 2009
training and equipping seminars: One
Generation
- The Heart, Mind, and Practice of
Parenting.
Humbly,
Pastor Dave

Introduction

Pastor Dave
Session 1: The
Centrality of the Home in the Evangelism and
Discipleship of the Next Generation
7:15-7:50pm
Dr. Voddie Baucham
Who is to be the
primarily disciple-maker of our kids? What happens
when parents give up that role? What is the role of
the church in making disciples of children? What
does the bible say about children and youth
ministries?
Baucham suggests that
Ephesians 6:1-4 teaches that the home is to be
central to the evangelism and discipleship the next
generation. Specifically, he points to three
aspects of this passage that teach this. The first
is the context of Ephesians 6:1. The second is
Paul’s use of the Fifth Commandment in Ephesians
6:2. And the third thing that points to the
centrality of the home is Paul’s unique and specific
call to fathers in Ephesians 6:4. In this session,
we’ll look at the meaning and practical implications
of each of these.
Break
7:50-8:00pm
Session 2: God’s Plan
for Authority
8:00-9:00pm
Tedd Tripp
How should parents
relate to their children? What does it mean to be
in authority over someone? What does it mean for a
child to honor or obey his parents? What are some
dangers of failing to properly exercise authority
over children?
Tedd Trip, author of
Shepherding a Child’s Heart, will talk to us
about the fact that, while all people have a certain
equality as God’s image bearers, God has
nevertheless established an authority structure
among mankind. We’ll learn about the fact that, as
one expression of this authority structure, God has
placed parents in authority over their children.
We’ll also learn that, when done rightly, it is a
blessing to live within this framework.
Saturday Morning
(8:30am-Noon)
Breakfast
8:30-9:00am
Session 3: The Heart
as the Wellspring of Life
9:00-10:00am
Tedd Tripp
From where does our
children’s behavior come? What causes our kids to
do good and bad things? How can we get our kids to
behave well? What should our ultimate goal be for
our kids behavior?
Dr. Tripp will help us
to understand that we all live out of our hearts.
It is from our hearts that all of our lust, love,
hate, anger, kindness, goodness, and all other
things come. Therefore, we shouldn’t want kids who
merely do good works. Instead, we should want kids
who have good hearts which produce good works. This
type of mindset is crucial for parenting well.
Break
10:00-10:10am
Session 4:
Corrective Discipline
10:10-11:10am
Pastor Dave
When our kids
misbehave, what are we to do about it? What does
the bible say about spanking and timeouts? Is there
a difference between disciplining and punishing?
How should I respond differently when my kids act
foolishly as opposed to childishly? What is the
goal of discipline?
In our last session with
Tedd Tripp, we’ll see that the point of discipline
is to help restore our children to a place of
wellness and blessing, that the bible teaches that
the root of lasting change is internal change, that
if we deal with heart issues, while acknowledging
the sinfulness of our own hearts, it is very easy
and natural to bring the gospel into the situation,
that it is only by grace through faith can our kid’s
hearts truly be changed, that the bible is not
ambiguous about spanking, and that God has given us
everything that we need to do what we’re called to
do in Jesus Christ.
Break
11:10-11:20am
Session 5: What
Now?
11:20am-Noon
Pastor Dave
What now? What
will all of this mean when I go home? Where do we
begin? What help does Grace Church offer? What
will all of this look like at Grace Church?
In our final session,
we’ll look briefly at the gospel and what it means
to be a disciple or follower of Jesus. We’ll talk
about some practical ways to begin making disciples
of our kids regardless of their age. We’ll provide
you with some tools to develop a discipleship game
plan for your family. And we’ll share with you some
thoughts on what this means for the youth and
children’s ministries at Grace.
